First memories of food are often the delicious treats we eat in our grandmother’s kitchens. They were the type of women who made everything from scratch. Cooking was more than just food, it was a way of showing love and taking care of one another. Comfort food; old fashioned cakes and cookies. At the Emma + Ollie bakeshop you can find the classics you grew up loving. Our menu changes according to what is fresh and in season. We want all who come to Emma + Ollie to feel they have stepped into an elevated version of their own grannies’ kitchen.

[When making chicken-fried steak] Rather seasons flour with a little smoked paprika and then uses what’s left over to thicken the gravy. The staff at Emma + Ollie serves the steak over crispy hash browns with a ladleful of peppered cream gravy and over-easy eggs. The dish is nicknamed the Papa’s Plate “because only a papa could eat it,” but Rather says some people also call it the Texas hangover cure.

Walk up the steps, across the wooden porch, and through Emma + Ollie’s front door, and if you don’t slow down, you’ll run smack-dab into the pastry case. Reflecting Rather’s typical largesse, it’s brimming with a dozen or more daily options. There are scones that put velvet to shame and giant amber-crusted croissants that erupt in a fountain of flakes the moment you take a bite.

Perhaps the best news around these parts is that the Pastry Queen is back. Chef Rebecca Rather, famous for her cookbooks and the much-missed Rather Sweet Bakery, recently opened breakfast/lunch hot spot Emma + Ollie in a beautiful old bungalow. Beignets, offered all day, are powdered-sugar-dusted clouds, and you won’t want to miss the biscuit bar.
